Well, I’m Brazilian and I’m only 17. In Brazil the great Universities are usually public, such as USP and UFMG. I’m going to a very good public University here in February, I’ll go to the English and Literature undergraduate course.

Once I’ll be studying English, I’d really like to do the graduate course in an English-speaking country. But my parents won’t be able to afford it for me and neither would I even if I spent these next four years working without spending even one penny. As you know, higher education in the United States is not free. Students here from families with modest income apply for financial aid from the universities.

In the past international students were not eligible for financial aid from the top universities such as Yale but that has changed.

International students are now eligible for financial aid under the same rules as U.S. students. It is based on your family’s income. If your family’s income is very low, Yale pays 100-percent of the costs, whether you are American or not.

I know that is true for a full-time student. I do not know if that is true for a student who wants to visit Yale for one semester. You need to ask Yale.

Aside from financial aid, which is based on financial need, there are a great many exchange and award programs that give scholarships based on merit and achievement as well. One can combine both financial aid and merit scholarships.

Yale has an office dedicated solely to financial aid and the office is very helpful and friendly. On the Yale University web site look for “Financial Aid” and email the office with your questions.
